How To Build A Capsule Wardrobe

As we step into the new year, let’s leave closet chaos in the past and explore the intentionality of curating a capsule wardrobe. Embracing fewer items, in a delicate balance of the right number and combination, can lead to greater contentment - even beyond the realm of fashion.

What is it?

The challenge of curating a timeless capsule wardrobe is a great way to simplify your closet and hone in on your individual style! It involves selecting the right number and combination of clothing, in a cohesive color pallet, suitable for a particular season or climate. The goal is to create a versatile wardrobe that can be mixed and matched to create numerous outfits for all occasions!

Courtney Carver made this concept popular with Project 333. These guidelines require that only 33 items are chosen to be worn over a 3 month period. However, to curate the perfect collection, you can adjust the quantity and time frame based on your lifestyle and location.

The formula that I am going to experiment with this year is as shown above: 15 tops, 10 bottoms, 5 rompers or dresses, 5 outerwear, 5 shoes. I choose not to include accessories, undergarments, gym clothes, swimsuits, or sleepwear.

Organization Tips

Here are some of my best tips for arranging your closet space from my experience working as a professional organizer!

  1. Categorize by article type or occasion

  2. Use matching hangers and color code each section (white, ROYGBP, gray, black) for a cohesive visual experience

  3. Use shelf dividers for folded sweaters, jeans, or shoes!

  4. Use drawer dividers in a dresser for undergarments, swimsuits, loungewear, and activewear

  5. At the start of the year, turn all your hangers backwards. As you wear each article, turn the hanger forward. Then, at the end of the year you will know which items went unworn and can be considered for donation or resale.

Bible Verses

Spiritual implications are also woven into our wardrobe choices — from the celebration of individuality as a divine creation to the confidence that arises when our outward appearance harmonizes with our inner convictions.
