5 Healthy Habits of a Holistic Homemaker

If you’re here, chances are you’re seeking to become a more holistic homemaker. Cultivating healthy practices for your home, mind, body, and soul is the most effective thing you can do for yourself and your family. So I’m sharing my best advice for developing 5 areas of healthy habits for homemakers.

Spiritual and Physical Discipline

“God paid a great price for you. So use your body to honor God.” - 1 Corinthians 6:20

The connection between body and soul is undeniable. When God created Adam, the first human, he breathed “Ruach” or the breath of life in him. That breath of life from our creator is the soul within us. We are spiritual beings dwelling in physical bodies. (After all, this earth is not our forever home!) But lack of physical discipline impacts our soul’s wellness as well. So how can we best manage the spiritual and physical aspects of our lives on earth? The answer is discipline. Optimizing your spiritual and physical fitness requires a refining process where self control and consistency are nurtured. These happen to be traits we need to be most useful in service to God! Protecting and strengthening our bodies keeps us from cutting years off of our lives and ministry.

  • Spiritual Disciplines to Adopt: Set aside intentional time to be alone with Jesus. Read and study the Bible, keep a Prayer Journal, and consider fasting. Attend worship with your family. All of these things deepen your relationship with God so that He can transform and refine you from the inside out!

  • Physical Disciplines to Adopt: Develop a routine of exercise and movement, such as HIIT workouts, strength training, yoga, and mobility training. Eat unprocessed whole foods. Drink enough water. A well-functioning body gives us more energy and longevity!

House Management Routine

“Lazy people want much but get little, but those who work hard will prosper.” - Proverbs 13:4

A healthy home leads to a healthy mind. Keeping the area you live in clean, clutter-free, and organized fosters creativity and peace. So consider adopting these techniques to keep your space healthy.

  • Declutter: Take inventory of everything. Then be brutally honest with yourself about the things that are essential, those that add value, and those that are junk. Purge and sell or donate the unnecessary items, which ultimately just get in the way.

  • Organize: Implement systems to maintain your things. Store all like items together, separated by category, and contain them using bins, baskets, and drawer dividers. This way, everything has aesthetic appeal AND creates a system where everything has a home and is easy to find/put away.

  • Clean: Clean for 15 minutes a day to keep your home tidy and fresh without getting behind. Joshua Field Milburn from The Minimalists calls this “setting the stage”. At the end of the day, go around the house for just 15 minutes, picking up clutter and wiping down the mess. This has profound effects on your mindset as you will wake up to peace instead of leftover chaos. Implement a daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly chore list and consider taking on the Clean & Organized 30 Day Challenge!

  • Design: Minimalist design leaves room to breath, both mentally and physically. After you’ve decluttered & organized, you’re left with only the items that increase your tranquility and a system that enhances the way you relate to them. Most importantly, the space should reflect the personality of all those who live there. As a homemaker, we want to pay special attention to the details to curate our own unique style.

Time and Schedule Management

“So be careful how you live. Don’t live like fools, but like those who are wise. Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days. Don’t act thoughtlessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to do.” - Ephesians 5:15-17

Keeping everything and everyone in your home running smoothly takes loads of coordination and communication. Even if you have a great memory, WRITE IT DOWN. In fact, write it twice! Have current, mobile access to each member of your family and to shared events by syncing your Google Calendars, and keep a master copy on a calendar at home.

Finance Management

“Teach those who are rich in this world not to be proud and not to trust in their money, which is so unreliable. Their trust should be in God, who richly gives us all we need for our enjoyment.” 1 Timothy 6:17

Dave Ramsey said it best: “You must gain control over your money or the lack of, or it will forever control you.” Don’t let your finances be the driving force in your life. Take steps to improve your financial health by budgeting, saving, and bookkeeping. Consider the EveryDollar app and a Conscious spending plan

It’s crucial to be financially aware & responsible, but be careful not to let your wealth become your god. Generous giving is an act of trust in God’s provision and an essential characteristic of a well-rounded homemaker.

Intentional Mealtimes

“Day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.” - Acts 2:46-47

This is perhaps the easiest of all of the habits to adopt: Eat together as a family. Unplug, listen, and connect. Family dinners are an opportunity for laughter and teaching. (Pro-Tip: Focus on serving nutritious foods - an added bonus with physical benefits!)

Use your mealtimes for kitchen ministry, too! There are numerous examples in the Bible of Jesus, His disciples, and the early church reaping the benefits of sharing meals together. A home cooked meal brings people together to share joy – and even the Gospel!
