Welcome to HU
Is it just me, or does it seem that our society is pushing every young woman to become a “Girl Boss,” “Boss Babe,” or “Corporate Queen”? We’ve all heard these phrases thrown around in the online space. But if you are anything like me, you never really wanted to be a girl boss. You never bought into the grind culture. You just seek to live a simple, yet fulfilling lifestyle.
Nevertheless, you go to college, get that degree, and join the career world. But you’re still left feeling unfulfilled. You're doing all the "right" things, but feel disconnected from the path God has for you. Maybe you even decide to start your own business like me! You think that perhaps you'll finally be happy when you have control of your own schedule and vacation time, right?
If that sounds familiar, I hope my story will help you in your pursuit of purpose. After I graduated college with my business degree, I went back to school for my Interior Designer certification. Overworked and underpaid, I decided to leave my position and start a virtual assistance business. Don't get me wrong, I am grateful for every client I’ve worked with and all of the experiences I've had in social media management, website design, and bookkeeping. But even in the pursuit of my own business, I felt stuck. It didn’t matter what job I tried, I just never felt like I had found my purpose. I kept searching. Fast forward another year, I started an Etsy store because maybe this time I would be happy working with my hands in a way that honors God! But you can't force creativity... or God's hand.
Over time, I realized that I've been pursuing business success to cover up my shame – shame in feeling that there was something wrong with me for my inner desire to use my talents in the home instead of building a career. In the midst of my wrestling, God spoke to my heart. It wasn't that I had no interests or passions worth pursuing for profit or that I was a freeloader for valuing homemaking over money-making. It was that He did not put the desire to be career and money-driven in my heart. I had been struggling not because I “wasn't good enough” at anything, but because my purpose would not be found in the workplace at all. That was not who God created me to be.
All of my maternal instincts and passions for homemaking are the desires that He has placed in my heart, and the hearts of His female creation. There is NOTHING wrong with me (or you!). Society and modern culture have been trying to dilute the natural, God-given qualities of our character. I know there are other Christian women out there who feel the same calling on their lives – to place their priority and best efforts on work in the home rather than the workplace.
I believe the calling on our lives to be Christian homemakers is summarized by this: God created the family as a metaphor to reveal His commitment to His children and the church. Christian women create the foundation for their families to be an example of God's love by glorifying and honoring Him through their homemaking. Homemakers are to bring beauty and order out of emptiness and chaos. They are to be Christ's dwelling place. Their role is to teach their children about God's Word and be an example through their actions. Their love is to be selfless and unconditional, like the love of Christ.
This can seem like a daunting task, but trust me, sister. The Lord is at work in you and for you! I wanted to create Homemakers University as a tool for Him to use in your life. Thank you for being here!
So why join me on this journey?
My goal for Homemakers University is to empower the Proverbs 31 woman in the 21st century to find purpose in homemaking and show the world the true value of this responsibility.
