Simplifying 101: Decluttering Your Home & Heart
The new year is the perfect time to simplify your life—not just by decluttering your home, but also by examining what’s taking up space in your heart and mind. Decluttering is about more than getting rid of things; it’s about making room for what truly matters.
Declutter both your physical and spiritual spaces with intentionality using these reflective questions:
Decluttering Your Home
Start with your physical surroundings. A clutter-free home creates a peaceful atmosphere that allows you to focus on God, your family, and the things that bring you joy.
Questions to Ask Yourself When Decluttering Your Home:
Does this item serve a purpose or bring me joy?
If it’s not functional or meaningful, it’s junk.
Have I used this in the past year?
If not, identify why it’s worth keeping, or not.
Am I keeping this out of guilt or obligation?
Letting go of things that no longer serve you is freeing!
Is this item taking up space I could use for something more important?
Don’t forget that empty space can have a purpose - create calm, visual balance, and functionality.
Does it align with the home environment I want to create?
If it does not reflect your current values or design preferences, let it go!
Could someone else benefit from this item more than I do?
Sell or donate!

Decluttering your Heart
Physical clutter often mirrors spiritual clutter. Take time to reflect on what’s weighing on your heart.
Questions to Ask Yourself When Decluttering Your Heart:
What worries or fears do I need to release to God?
Surrender what you can’t control to God, trusting His plan.
What distractions pull me away from my goals?
Evaluate where you invest your time and energy.
Am I holding onto unforgiveness or resentment?
Release these burdens through prayer and seek reconciliation.
Am I prioritizing God in my daily life?
Declutter your schedule to make time for prayer, Bible study, and worship.
What habits are keeping me from a deeper relationship with Christ? What is one habit I can implement to grow closer to God?
Replace bad habits with a spiritual discipline, like journaling or scripture memorization.
“Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”
Prayer
Lord, search my heart and show me what I need to let go of—whether it’s worry, resentment, or distractions. Help me set the tone for a more intentional, Christ-centered year. May I declutter my heart and home so I can focus on what matters most: loving You and those around me. Amen.
