Spiritual Fitness 101: 7 Spiritual Disciplines
Just as we train our bodies for physical fitness, we are also called to train our spirits for spiritual fitness: the intentional practice of spiritual disciplines that draw us closer to God, strengthen our faith, and shape our character to reflect Christ.
This journey requires both discipline and self-control, but what is the difference?
Discipline is the implementation of a structured practice with certain habits that require commitment, even when we don’t feel like it.
Self-control is the ability to resist temptation and align our actions with our goals and God’s will, even when faced with distractions or desires that lead us astray.
“For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.”
To help you cultivate these disciplines in your daily life, I’ve created a 30-Day Spiritual Fitness Challenge (only $0.99)! This printable provides a structured calendar with daily tasks to strengthen your faith and develop consistency in these spiritual practices.
7 Spiritual Disciplines
Just as physical fitness requires regular exercise, spiritual fitness requires ongoing commitment to the seven spiritual disciplines.
1. Prayer
"Pray without ceasing." – 1 Thessalonians 5:17
Prayer is our direct line of communication with God. It deepens our faith, aligns our hearts with His will, and provides strength in times of weakness.
Action Steps:
Set aside dedicated time for prayer each day
Pray scripture to strengthen your prayers
Keep a prayer journal to track prayers and answered prayers
2. Bible Study & Meditation
"Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." – Psalm 119:105
Studying God’s Word equips us with wisdom and guidance. Meditation allows us to reflect deeply on Scripture, applying it to our daily lives.
Action Steps:
Read at least one chapter of the Bible daily
Use Bible study tools or devotionals to dig deeper
Memorize scripture monthly
3. Worship
"God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth." – John 4:24
Worship is more than just singing—it is expressing reverence and adoration for God in all areas of life.
Action Steps:
Incorporate worship music into your daily routine
Attend church services and actively participate in worship
Worship through gratitude, thanking God daily
4. Fasting
"But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face..." – Matthew 6:17
Fasting is a way to deny our flesh and focus fully on God. It strengthens our dependency on Him, breaks spiritual strongholds (Isaiah 58:6), and prepares us for greater spiritual insight.
Action Steps:
Choose a fasting method (food, social media, etc.)
Use fasting time to pray and study the Bible
Start with a short fast and gradually increase
5. Service
"Whoever brings blessing will be enriched, and one who waters will himself be watered." – Proverbs 11:25
Serving others reflects Christ’s love and teaches humility. It shifts our focus from self to others.
Action Steps:
Volunteer at your church or a local ministry
Find small ways to serve in daily life (helping a neighbor, cooking for someone in need, etc.)
Make service a family activity
6. Stewardship
"Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found faithful." – 1 Corinthians 4:2
Stewardship is managing God’s blessings—time, treasures, and talents—wisely and for His glory.
Action Steps:
Tithe consistently and give generously
Budget and manage finances with a biblical perspective
Be intentional with time, prioritizing God-centered activities
7. Evangelism
"Go therefore and make disciples of all nations." – Matthew 28:19
Evangelism is sharing the Gospel and bringing people to God by spreading the message of Christ’s love and salvation.
Action Steps:
Share your testimony with others
Look for opportunities to speak about Jesus in everyday conversations
Support or participate in missions
By engaging in these spiritual disciplines with both discipline and self-control, you’ll grow closer to God, strengthen your faith, and live a more spiritually fit life. Are you ready to take the challenge?
